Halving (Bitcoin)
Event every 4 years halving the Bitcoin block reward.
Halving: every 210k blocks (~4 years). Reward: 50 (2009) → 25 → 12.5 → 6.25 → 3.125 (Apr 2024) → 1.5625 (2028). Cuts new supply. Historically cycle top 12-18 months post-halving.
In plain words
Every 4 years Bitcoin halves the reward miners get for a new block. So 2x fewer new BTC are produced than before. With demand rising and supply shrinking, price historically pumps 12-18 months after a halving. Worked in 2013, 2017, 2021 and 2024-2025.
Example
Halving Nov 2012: BTC $12 → $1163 by Dec 2013 (97x). Jul 2016: $650 → $19k Dec 2017 (29x). May 2020: $8.6k → $69k Nov 2021 (8x). Apr 2024: $64k → $100k+ Dec 2024.
