Fed Funds Rate
What it shows
The Fed funds rate (US Federal Reserve) sets the cost of money in the economy. It is a macro foundation, which affects the liquidity available to risk assets.
How to read it
Policy direction and market expectations matter more than the level itself: turns toward easing have historically preceded liquidity flowing into risk assets. It is macro background, read it with DXY.
Parameters
- Fed rate level / direction
- Rate cuts ease financial conditions; hikes tighten them and drain liquidity.
- Positive reading: Cuts / easing: historically a supportive environment for risk assets.
- Negative reading: Hikes / tightening: historically a headwind for crypto.
- Neutral reading: Rates on hold (a pause): a neutral context, the market awaits direction.
Example
The Fed signals a pause or rate cuts. Historically easier policy and cheaper money favored risk assets. A hiking cycle and “higher for longer” historically weighed on crypto; unchanged rates are a neutral macro backdrop.
