Protocol TVL
What it shows
Total Value Locked: the combined value of capital locked in a DeFi protocol (or network). It shows how much real money actually uses the protocol, i.e. its usefulness and the capital's trust.
How to read it
Compare TVL with the token price: rising TVL on a flat price is historically healthy, underappreciated adoption, while falling TVL during a price rise is a warning divergence. Beware of TVL driven solely by reward emissions.
Parameters
- TVL
- The value of assets locked in the protocol (staking, lending, liquidity).
- Positive reading: Rises with price or despite a flat price, which means historically real capital inflow and adoption.
- Negative reading: Falls faster than price, which means historically capital flight and waning trust.
- Neutral reading: A stable TVL: established, unchanging protocol usage.
Example
TVL rises 20% while the token price is flat: historically real capital inflow leading the valuation. A sharp TVL outflow faster than the price drop is historically a sign of lost trust; a stable TVL is neutral, mature usage.
